The additives added have the objective of forces control between the particles to promote the stability. The stabilization mechanism efficiency results in a dispersion condition that reflects on the rheological behavior and sedimentation improving the properties pieces produces by slip casting process. In the present work were used the slate waste generated by the extraction and beneficiation stages of the rock in Minas Gerais State (Brazil). The waste was characterized by microstructure showing heterogeneous particles in shape and size: isotropicelongated and lamellar. The particle sizes distributions showed a significant percentage of particles with diameter between 0.5 to 25 μm by the laser diffraction technique as well as the automated image analysis. The X-ray diffractometry indicated the presence of quartzmuscovitechlinoclorecalcite and feldspars. The chemical analyses showed the high presence of SiO2 and Al2O3 and these two oxides are the major constituents of quartz and silica-alumina mineralssuch as muscovite and chlinochlore. The suspension was prepared by mixing the slate powder and water followed by magnetic stirring for 24 hours in order to homogenize the suspension with four different dispersants concentrations and six different solid percentages. The slate suspensions presented a complex behavior due to the many minerals founded in its constitution. The suspensions properties were analysed by: particle sizezeta potentialviscosity and gravity and centrifugal sedimentation. It was observed that increasing the solids percentage the formation of agglomerates (~100 μm) occurred including the samples with pure slate. When dispersantscitric acidpoly (ammonium acrylate) and sodium poly (methacrylate) and poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) were addeddifferent particle size distributions was verified. For suspensions with citric acid and poly (acrylate) ammonium was observed bimodal curves and to sodium poly (methacrylate) and poly (dialyldimethylammonium chloride) - (PDADMACDMAC) dispersantseither individually or in combinationmonomodal curves with slightly deflection to the right comparing to slate pure suspensions with peaks ranging from 6 and 8.5m. The zeta potential values obtained for all suspensions were generally negative for the pH ranges evaluated. The values obtained for the suspensions with the PMANa and PDADMAC dispersants suggest a dominance of negative surface charge except to pH below 4. In the gravity sedimentation and centrifugation tests was evidenced that increasing the solids fraction the sedimentation rate decrease due the hindered settling effect. This phenomenon is present in concentrated suspensions where large interactions occur between the particles and the sedimentation is delayed by neighbour particles. Regarding the rheological behaviorthe slate suspensions exhibited a pseudoplastic behavior with viscosity increasing as a function of the percentage of solids in the suspensions. In the cases studiedthe addition of different dispersants slightly affected this behaviorwith lower viscosities obtained for poly (ammonium acrylate) and poly (sodium methacrylate) dispersants. The results obtained by centrifugal compression showed that the suspensions containing the dispersants poly (sodium methacrylate) and poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride)presented sediments with a higher capacity of compression despite the presence of aggregates. The highest voluminous and open sediments were obtained using the PDADMAC dispersanta result consistent with the higher viscosity data. The yield stress values of suspensions were lowest to pure slate than the dispersant suspensions showing lower forces between the particles and consequently the lower viscosity data obtained. The results showed the complex behavior of the slate powder and the difficulty to obtain stabilized suspensions without agglomerates and sedimentation of particles. Neverthelessthe slate powder can be used in ceramic processing. Resumo: Interações de reagentes orgânicos com superfícies de óxidos são importantes no processamento cerâmico de partículas finascomo por exemploo processo de colagem de barbotinas (“slip casting”). Os aditivos adicionados têm como objetivo principal o controle das forças entre as partículas na suspensão visando sua estabilidade. A eficiência do mecanismo de estabilização resulta em uma condição de dispersão que reflete em aspectos de comportamento reológico e de sedimentação associados ao sistema econsequentementenas propriedades das peças produzidas. No presente trabalho utilizou-se o resíduo de pó de ardósia gerado nas etapas de extração e beneficiamento pelas mineradoras no Estado de Minas Gerais - Brasil. O resíduo foi caracterizado quanto a microestrutura evidenciando a heterogeneidade de forma e tamanhomostrando partículas de formato isotrópicode folhas e lamelares. Os tamanhos de partículas encontrados no rejeito foram da ordem de 05 até 25μm tanto pela técnica de difração a laser quanto pelas análises de imagens automatizadas. A difração de raios X mostrou a presença dos principais minerais constituintes dessa rocha: quartzomoscovitaclinoclorocalcita e feldspatos. As análises químicas mostraram a presença de óxidos de silício e alumínio em maiores quantidades devido a presença de quartzo e minerais sílico-aluminososcomo moscovita e clinocloro. As suspensões de ardósia produzidascom diferentes porcentagens de sólidos e dispersantesapresentaram complexo comportamento em função da variada mineralogia tendo suas propriedades analisadas por: tamanho de partículaspotencial zetaviscosidade e sedimentação. Foi observado que com o aumento da porcentagem de sólidos ocorreu a formação de aglomerados (~100m) incluindo as amostras com ardósia pura. Quando os dispersantesácido cítricopoli(acrilato de amônio) e poli(metacrilato) de sódio e poli(cloreto de dialildimetilamônio) foram adicionadosresultados diferentes foram obtidos em função das características específicas dos mesmos. As distribuições de tamanho de partículas para as suspensões com ácido cítrico e poli(acrilato) de amônio mostraram curvas bimodais com um pico na região submicrométrica e outro na região de maior tamanho de partículas indicando a presença de aglomerados. A adição dos dispersantes ácido poli(metacrilato) de sódio (PMANa) e poli(cloreto de dialildimetilamônio) – (PDADMACDMAC)tanto individualmente ou combinadosafetaram ligeiramente as curvas de distribuição de tamanho de partículas das suspensões que apresentam-se monomodais com picos variando de 6 e 85m. Em relação a ardósia pura verificou-se o aumento do número de aglomerados com deslocamento das curvas para esquerda do eixo das abcissas. Os valores de potencial zeta obtidos para todas as suspensões foramem geralnegativos para as faixas de pH avaliadas. Os valores obtidos para as suspensões com os dispersantes PMANa e PDADMAC isoladamente sugerem dominância das cargas superficiais das partículas da ardósia em valores específicos de pHcarga positiva abaixo de pH 4 e carga negativa acima de pH 11. Nos testes de sedimentação por gravidade e centrifugação para todas as suspensõesficou evidenciado que quando a fração volumétrica de sólidos em água foi aumentadaa taxa de sedimentação diminuiu devido ao efeito de impedimento (“hindered settling”). Fenômeno frequente em suspensões concentradas onde ocorre grandes interações entre as partículas e a sedimentação é atrasada pelas partículas vizinhas. Em relação ao comportamento reológicoas suspensões de ardósia exibiram comportamento pseudoplástico com aumento da viscosidade em função da porcentagem de sólidos nas suspensões. Nos casos estudadosa adição de diferentes dispersantes afetou ligeiramente esse comportamento sendo menores viscosidades obtidas para os dispersantes poli(acrilato de amônio) e poli(metacrilato de sódio). Os resultados obtidos para suspensões sob compressão por centrifugação mostraram que nas suspensões contendo os dispersantes poli(metacrilato de sódio) e poli(cloreto de dialildimetilamônio)os sedimentos apresentaram maior capacidade de compressãomas com a presença de agregados de partículas. O dispersante PDADMAC quando utilizado isoladamente apresentou sedimentos mais volumosos e abertosresultado consistente com os dados mais elevados de viscosidade. O limite de escoamento das suspensões foi menor para as suspensões de ardósia pura do que os valores das suspensões com dispersante evidenciando menores forças de ligação entre as partículas e os menores valores de viscosidade obtidos. Os resultados mostraram o complexo comportamento do pó de ardósia e a dificuldade de manter a suspensão estabilizada sem a formação de aglomerados e sedimentação de partículas não impedindo totalmentesua utilização em processamento cerâmico.
