The emulsifying performance of a sustainable oil-in-water emulsifier named EcoSmooth ™ APP- 5000 Formulation Aid (proposed INCI name: Myristyl/Stearyl Xylosides (and) Myristyl alcohol (and) Stearyl alcohol) was thoroughly characterized/studied using high throughput research (HTR) workflows and design of experiment (DOE) tools .This fundamental design of experiment study revealed the broad emulsification efficiency of this biobased non-ionic emulsifier made from reaction of pentose (xylose) with fatty alcohols. The DOE parameters studied were the emulsifier percentage varying from 0.2 % to 4 % and the oil phase percentage varying from 10 to 40 % in presence of a small percentage of Xanthan gum. During the first part of the study
  • the optical clarity of the emulsifier/oil phase blends variants were measured at different temperatures ranging from 70 ºC to 30 ºC. The data generated allowed to make the ternary phase diagram showing the optimal emulsifier concentration relative to the specific oil phase studied. Fundamental experiments have also revealed that dispersion of the emulsifier in the oil phase prior to emulsification leads to generation of lamellar phases which provide a steric barrier to droplet coalescence and promote long term emulsion stability. The stability of the multiple emulsions was controlled with a LUMiSizer equipment.
