  • The centrifugal separation of particles or droplets in dispersions is important in a variety of applications
  • e.g. mineral processing
  • water and waste water treatment
  • multistep processing of nanomaterials and biotechnology. Despite numerous studies in the past
  • separation processes of concentrated dispersions driven by gravity or centrifugal forces are not yet completely understood. Centrifuges can be subdivided into two categories: (1) centrifuges operating with tubes of constant cross section and (2) centrifuges operating with disc or cylinder rotors whose cross-sectional area changes with distance along the axis of rotation. This paper investigates the sedimentation process in centrifuges of these two categories experimentally and theoretically. Sample cells used in this study
  • left rectangular cell with D = 2.2 mm optical path length
  • middle rectangular cell with D = 5 mm
  • right sector-shaped cell with D = 5 mm
  • Analytical centrifugation was used to investigate the sedimentation process in different cell geometries. The separation of monodisperse silica and polydisperse quartz dispersions was studied at different volume con- centrations using the STEP-technology. 391
  • The suspensions were measured in sample cells with constant and increasing cross sections along the longitudinal centre of the cells. The progression of the supernatant-suspensions phase boundary during cen- trifugation in both cell types is experimentally the same. The same holds for concentration changes measured radially along the centre of the cells using either cell types. However
  • the sediment height is smaller in the sector-shaped cells compared with that of the rectangular cells. It must be emphasized that in contrast to sedimentation under gravity
  • for a centrifugal field the initial concentration decreases with increasing radial position due to higher acceleration acting upon the particles. This applies even for monodisperse particle systems. The dilution is further elevated by particle motion on radial trajectories. sector shaped cells
